Importance
of Praying the Rosary
Why is it so important?
The
Prayers of the Rosary
For those who
may be a little rusty on the exact
words of the prayers, we have spelled them out.
The
Mysteries of the Rosary
A general overview of the three
traditional Mysteries of the
Rosary - Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious - plus the Luminous and
Challenging Mysteries is presented
followed by the Scriptural Readings and Images to be meditated upon
while offering the prayers.
IMPORTANCE
of the ROSARY
In a number of verifiable Marian Apparitions of the last two centuries (1), the Virgin Mary, the
Mother of the Son of God, Jesus, the Second Person of the Most Holy
Trinity, has urged us to meditate on the Rosary as a most effective
remedy for obtaining graces from God.
Several Popes have officially endorsed it (2)(3),
and miguel de Portugal (4),
a practicing scientist
before his abandoning the world at the call of God, prays the Holy
Rosary and endorses it without question. After the Holy Sacrifice of
the Mass the Rosary it is the most important prayer that any Christian
can offer.
If the Mother of the Son of God - our Lord Jesus Christ - encourages us
to pray it, even a scientist with Eyes to See and Ears to Hear cannot -
should not! - refuse Her request.
Queen of the Holy Rosary inspire in my heart a true love for this
devotion so that meditating on the mysteries of our Redemption, which
are recalled therein, they may enrich us with its fruits, secure
justice in the world, the conversion of sinners, the fulfillment of
Your plans and intentions, dear Mother, the Triumph of Your Immaculate
Heart and that the favor which I ask before each decade be heard and in
His Merciful Goodness granted in accordance to His Will - I ask it for
the greater Glory of God, for Your own honor, Mary, and for the
salvation of souls. Amen!
Then
pray...

The text of all the prayers....
The
Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of
heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under
Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died , and was buried. He descended into
hell; the third day he rose again; He ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He
shall come to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom shall have
no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic faith,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of
the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
The
Our Father
(prayed on the one large bead before
each decade)
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us
this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive
those who trespass against us; and let us not fall into temptation, but
deliver us from the evil one. Amen.
The
Hail Mary
(prayed on the ten small beads of each
decade)
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee,
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now
and at the hour of our death. Amen
The
Glory Be
(prayed after the last Hail Mary of
each the decade)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the
Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be
world without end. Amen.
Prayer
of Fatima
(prayed after the Glory Be)
Oh, My Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell and
lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy
Mercy.
[note: "those who are in most need of Thy Mercy" refers to the
forgotten souls in Purgatory who have no one to pray for them.]
The
Hail, Holy Queen
(prayed at the conclusion of the
Rosary)
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, hail, our life,
our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children
of Eve! To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this
vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy
toward us; and after this, our exile, show us the blessed fruit of thy
womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary - Pray for us, O
Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of
Christ.

In those days John the Baptist
appeared, preaching
in the desert of Judea. [Matthew 3:1]
|

He said: "I am 'the voice of one
crying out in the
desert, "Make straight the way of the Lord,"' as Isaiah the prophet
said." [John 1:23] |

And this is what he proclaimed:
"One mightier than I

I have baptized you with water;
he will baptize you

The next day he saw Jesus coming
toward him and
said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world." [John

After Jesus was baptized, he
came up from the water
and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove and coming upon him. [Matthew 3:16]
|
Hail Mary... |
And a voice came from the
heavens, saying, "This is
my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." [Matthew 3:17]
|
Hail Mary... |
"Go, therefore, and make
disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the

Hail Mary... |
"I did not know him, but the one
who sent me to

He Challenges us to believe
in Him fully. [anon.] |
Our Father... |
And he came to Nazareth,
where he was brought up: and he went into the synagogue, according to
his custom, on the sabbath day; and he rose up to read. And the book
of Isaias the prophet was delivered unto him. [Luke 4:
16-17]
|
Hail Mary... |
And as he unfolded the book,
he found the place where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon
me. Wherefore he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he
hath sent me to heal the contrite of heart, To preach deliverance
to the captives, and sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that
are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of
reward. [Luke 4: 18-19]
|
Hail Mary... |
And when he had folded the
book, he restored it to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all
in the synagogue were fixed on him. [Luke 4:20]
|
Hail Mary... |
And he began to say to them:
This day is fulfilled this scripture in your ears. [Luke 4: 21]
|
Hail Mary... |
And all gave testimony to
him: and they wondered at the words of grace that proceeded from his
mouth, and they said: Is not this the son of Joseph? [Luke 4:
22]
|
Hail Mary... |
And he said to them:
Doubtless you will say to me this similitude: Physician, heal thyself:
as great things as we have heard done in Capharnaum, do also here in
thy own country. [Luke 4: 23]
|
Hail Mary... |
And he said: Amen I say to
you, that no prophet is accepted in his own country. In truth I
say to you, there were many widows in the days of Elias in Israel, when
heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there was a great
famine throughout all the earth. And to none of them was Elias sent,
but to Sarepta of Sidon, to a widow woman. And there were many lepers
in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet: and none of them was
cleansed but Naaman the Syrian. [Luke 4: 24-27]
|
Hail Mary... |
And all they in the
synagogue, hearing these things, were filled with anger. And they
rose up and thrust him out of the city; and they brought him to the
brow of the hill, whereon their city was built, that they might cast
him down headlong. [Luke 4:28-29]
|
Hail Mary... |
But he passing through the
midst of them, went his way. [Luke 4:30]
|
Hail Mary... |
And he went down into
Capharnaum, a city of Galilee, and there he taught them on the sabbath
days. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his speech
was with power. [Luke 4:31-32]

Jesus challenges us to
refrain from judgment. [anon.] |
Our Father... |
And again he entered into
Capharnaum after some days. And it was heard that he was in the
house, and many came together, so that there was no room; no, not even
at the door; and he spoke to them the word. And they came to him,
bringing one sick of the palsy, who was carried by four. And when they
could not offer him unto him for the multitude, they uncovered the roof
where he was; and opening it, they let down the bed wherein the man
sick of the palsy lay. [Mark 2: 1-4]
|
Hail Mary... |
And when Jesus had seen
their faith, he saith to the sick of the palsy: Son, thy sins are
forgiven thee. [Mark 2: 15]
|
Hail Mary... |
And there were some of the
scribes sitting there, and thinking in their hearts: Why doth this man
speak thus? he blasphemeth. Who can forgive sins, but God only? [Mark
2: 6-7]
|
Hail Mary... |
Which Jesus presently
knowing in his spirit, that they so thought within themselves, saith to
them: Why think you these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to
say to the sick of the palsy: Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say:
Arise, take up thy bed, and walk? But that you may know that the
Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick
of the palsy,) I say to thee: Arise, take up thy bed, and go into
thy house. [Mark 2: 8-11]
|
Hail Mary... |
And immediately he arose;
and taking up his bed, went his way in the sight of all; so that all
wondered and glorified God, saying: We never saw the like. [Mark
2: 12]
|
Hail Mary... |
And he went forth again to
the sea side; and all the multitude came to him, and he taught them. [Mark
2: 13]
|
Hail Mary... |
And when he was passing by,
he saw Levi the son of Alpheus sitting at the receipt of custom; and he
saith to him: Follow me. And rising up, he followed him. [Mark
2: 14]
|
Hail Mary... |
And it came to pass, that as
he sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat down
together with Jesus and his disciples. For they were many, who also
followed him. [Mark 2: 15]
|
Hail Mary... |
And the scribes and the
Pharisees, seeing that he ate with publicans and sinners, said to his
disciples: Why doth your master eat and drink with publicans and
sinners? [Mark 2: 16]
|
Hail Mary... |
Jesus hearing this, saith to
them: They that are well have no need of a physician, but they that are
sick. For I came not to call the just, but sinners. [Mark 2: 17]

Your fathers did eat manna
in the desert, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from
heaven; that if any man eat of it, he may not die. [John 6:
49-50]
|
Hail Mary... |
I am the living bread which
came down from heaven. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for
ever; and the bread that I will give, is my flesh, for the life of the
world. [John 6: 51-52]
|
Hail Mary... |
The Jews therefore strove
among themselves, saying: How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say unto you: Except you eat the
flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not have life
in you. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath
everlasting life: and I will raise him up in the last day. [John
6:
53-55]
|
Hail Mary... |
For my flesh is meat indeed:
and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my
blood, abideth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath
sent me, and I live by the Father; so he that eateth me, the same also
shall live by me. [John 6: 56-58]
|
Hail Mary... |
This is the bread that came
down from heaven. Not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead. He
that eateth this bread, shall live for ever. These things he said,
teaching in the synagogue, in Capharnaum. [John 6: 59-60]
|
Hail Mary... |
Many therefore of his
disciples, hearing it, said: This saying is hard, and who can hear it?
But Jesus, knowing in himself, that his disciples murmured at this,
said to them: Doth this scandalize you? If then you shall see the Son
of man ascend up where he was before? [John 6: 61-63]
|
Hail Mary... |
It is the spirit that
quickeneth: the flesh profiteth nothing. The words that I have spoken
to you, are spirit and life. But there are some of you that believe
not. For Jesus knew from the beginning, who they were that did not
believe, and who he was, that would betray him. [John 6: 64-65]
|
Hail Mary... |
And he said: Therefore did I
say to you, that no man can come to me, unless it be given him by my
Father. After this many of his disciples went back; and walked no more
with him. [John 6: 66-67]
|
Hail Mary... |
Then Jesus said to the
twelve: Will you also go away? And Simon Peter answered him: Lord, to
whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we have
believed and have known, that thou art the Christ, the Son of God. [John
6: 68-70]

Our Father... |
Enter ye in at the narrow
gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to
destruction, and many there are who go in thereat. [Matthew 7:
13]
|
Hail Mary... |
How narrow is the gate, and
strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it!
[Matthew 7: 14]
|
Hail Mary... |
Beware of false prophets,
who come to you in the clothing of sheep, but inwardly they are
ravening wolves. [Matthew 7: 15]
|
Hail Mary... |
By their fruits you shall
know them. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? [Matthew
7: 16]
|
Hail Mary... |
Even so every good tree
bringeth forth good fruit, and the evil tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can an evil tree
bring forth good fruit. [Matthew 7: 17-18]
|
Hail Mary... |
Every tree that bringeth not
forth good fruit, shall be cut down, and shall be cast into the fire.
Wherefore by their fruits you shall know them. [Matthew 7:
19-20]
|
Hail Mary... |
Not every one that saith to
me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that
doth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the
kingdom of heaven. [Matthew 7: 21]
|
Hail Mary... |
Many will say to me in that
day: Lord, Lord, have not we prophesied in thy name, and cast out
devils in thy name, and done many miracles in thy name? And then will I
profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work
iniquity. [Matthew 7: 22-23]
|
Hail Mary... |
Every one therefore that
heareth these my words, and doth them, shall be likened to a wise man
that built his house upon a rock. [Matthew 7: 24]
|
Hail Mary... |
And the rain fell, and the
floods came, and the winds blew, and they beat upon that house, and it
fell not, for it was founded on a rock. [Matthew 7: 25]

You shall see the Son of man

Our Father... |
And they brought Jesus to the
high priest; and all
the priests and the scribes and the ancients assembled together. And
Peter followed him from afar off, even into the court of the high
priest; and he sat with the servants at the fire, and warmed himself. [Mark
14: 53-54]
|
Hail Mary... |
And the chief priests and all
the council sought for
evidence against Jesus, that they might put him to death, and found
none. [Mark 14: 55]
|
Hail Mary... |
For many bore false witness

evidences were not agreeing. [Mark 14: 56]
|
Hail Mary... |
And some rising up, bore false
witness against him,
saying: We heard him say, I will destroy this temple made with
hands, and within three days I will build another not made with hands. [Mark
14: 57-58]
|
Hail Mary... |
And their witness did not agree.
[Mark 14: 59]
|
Hail Mary... |
And the high priest rising up in
the midst, asked
Jesus, saying: Answerest thou nothing to the things that are laid to
thy charge by these men? [Mark 14: 60]
|
Hail Mary... |
But he held his peace, and
answered nothing. Again
the high priest asked him, and said to him: Art thou the Christ the Son
of the blessed God? [Mark 14: 61]
|
Hail Mary... |
And Jesus said to him: I am. And
you shall see the
Son of man sitting on the right hand of the power of God, and coming
with the clouds of heaven. [Mark 14: 62] |
Hail Mary... |
Then the high priest rending his
garments, saith:
What need we any further witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. What
think you? Who all condemned him to be guilty of death. [Mark
14: 63-64]
|
Hail Mary... |
And some began to spit on him,
and to cover his
face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him: Prophesy: and the
servants struck him with the palms of their hands. [Mark 14: 65]

The Hail, Holy Queen
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
hail, our life,
our sweetness, and our hope!
Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of
Christ.
O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death,
and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life,
grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the
Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they
contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ Our Lord.
Amen.

Indulgences associated with the
Holy Rosary: (6)
A plenary indulgence is
granted, if the Rosary is recited in a church
or public oratory or in a family group, a religious Community or pious
Association; a partial indulgence
is granted in other circumstances.
Now the Rosary is a certain formula of prayer, which is made up of
fifteen decades of 'Hail Marys' with an 'Our Father' before each
decade, and in which the recitation of each decade is accompanied by
pious meditation on a particular mystery of our Redemption. (Roman
Breviary)
The name 'Rosary,' however, is commonly used in reference to only a
third of the fifteen decades.
The gaining of the plenary indulgence is regulated by the
following norms:
1. The recitation of a
third part only of the Rosary suffices; but the five decades must be
recited continuously.
2. The vocal
recitation MUST be accompanied by pious meditation on the mysteries.
3. In public
recitation the mysteries must be announced in the manner customary in
the place; for private recitation, however, it suffices if the vocal
recitation is accompanied by meditation on the mysteries.
4. For those belonging
to the Oriental rites, amongst whom this devotion is not practiced, the
Patriarchs can determine some other prayers in honor of the Blessed
Virgin Mary (for those of the Byzantine rite, for example, the Hymn
'Akathistos' or the Office 'Paraclisis'); to the prayers thus
determined are accorded the same indulgences as for the Rosary.
NOTES
(2)
"The Rosary of the Virgin Mary, which
gradually took form in the second millennium under the guidance of the
Spirit of God, is a prayer loved by countless Saints and encouraged by
the Magisterium. The Rosary, though clearly Marian in character, is at
heart a Christocentric prayer." -
John
Paul II in Apostolic Letter
