Benedict XII : 1335-1342 A.D.
197. Born in Saverdun (France). Elected January 8,1335 - died April
25, 1342.
He was forced by Philip VI to live in
France who also took
action in Roman affairs.
He forced the bishops to have a residence and reformed the
Benedictine, Franciscan and Dominican orders.
Petrarque was crowned by him in Campidoglio on April 8th 1341.
He published the "pragmatic sanction" of Frankfurt, through
which he established that the
appointment of the emperor did not need the pontifical placet.
He was buried in the cathedral of Avignon. His pontificate lasted
7 years and 4
months.
Clement VI : 1342-1352 A.D.
198. Born in Maumont (France). Elected May 19, 1342 - died December
6, 1352.
He was a very learned and good-hearted
man.
He bought the city of Avignon for 18,000 golden florins.
He protected the Jews.
He shortened the interval between holy years to 50 years and
celebrated the 2nd one in 1350.
In a letter written on November 2nd 1342, Clement VI
recognised the custody of Holy places to Friars minors: in 1333 Robert,
King of Naples, had obtained some rights in the Holy Land from the
Sultan as a compensation for the numerous convents destroyed during the
prosecutions of Saracens that took place in Palestine and Syria.
He was buried in the monastery of La Chaise-Dieu, in the High
Loire. His pontificate lasted 10 years and 7 months.
Innocent VI : 1352-1362 A.D.
199. Born in Braisahmont (France). Elected December 30, 1352 - died
September 12, 1362.
He made the Spanish Alornoz restore the
order in
the Pontifical State.
He promoted arts and culture.
He fortified Avignon with walls.
He established that during the Vacancy of the See the cardinals
were not entitled to issue laws aimed at limiting the authority of the
Pope and abolished the already passed ones.
Innocent VI, as you might see in two miniatures available in the
Vatican archives, had a beard and
was the only pope of the XIV and XV century to do so.
Julius II was the first one to imitate him and renew the custom.
He was buried in the Chapel of the Hospice of Villeneuve. His
pontificate lasted about 9 years
and 9 months.
