The
Papacy - A Historical Perspective
672-683 A.D.
Adeodatus II : 672-676 A.D.
77. Born in Rome. Elected April 11,672 - died July 17, 676.
With the help of his Missionaries, he
succeeded in
converting the Maronites, a strong people with an Armenian-Syrian
origin. He was the first to pronounce the words. "Greetings and
Apostolic
Blessing" during the lectures. He was the first Pope to sign his
letters and acts during the years of his pontificate.
He is buried in the Vatican Grottoes. His pontificate lasted 2
years and 6 months.
Donus : 676-678 A.D.
78. Born in Rome. Elected November 2, 676 - died April 2, 678.
During his pontificate, he put an end
to the Schism of the
Ravenna church. He encouraged the bishops to foster the diffusion of
the schools in Trier, in the Germanic Gaul and in Cambridge in England.
He ordered that the atrium of the St. Peter Basilica, which was
later given the Heaven, be sumptuously paved with different marbles.
He is buried in the Vatican Grottoes. His pontificate lasted 1
year and 5 months.
St. Agatho : 678-681 A.D.
79. Born in Palermo. Elected June 27, 678 - died January 10, 681
He kept in touch with English bishops
and fostered the
development of Ireland into a cultural center. He called the Sixth
Ecumenical Council. He was defined a
Thaumaturg, given his numerous miracles.
Contrary to the habit of his predecessors, Agatho looked after
the safe of the Roman Church personally.
According to an improbable tradition, Agatho was supposedly 103
years old at the moment of his election; he apparently died four years
later, rather than two, when he was 107.
He is buried in the Vatican Grottoes. His pontificate lasted 2
years and 6 months.
St. Leo II : 682-683 A.D.
80. Born in Sicily. Elected August 17, 682 - died July 3, 683.
He sumptuously celebrated religious
services in order to make the
faithful even more aware of the majesty of the Lord and introduced the
aspersion of holy water on the faithful during Christian rites.
Since he was very keen to music, he could reform the singing of the
liturgy and the concert of sacred hymns. He introduced the kiss of
peace to the Mass.
He is buried in St. Peter's church in the Cappella della Colonna.
His pontificate lasted only 10 months and a half.
