Stephen IV : 816-817 A.D.

97. Born in Rome. Elected June 22, 816 - died January 24, 817.

He tried to prevent internal turmoil by introducing an oath for the Emperor whereby he had to be faithful to the Pope. In Rheims, he consecrated Lodovic King of the Franks together with his wife Ermenengarde.

He founded the monastery of St. Pressede, where Greek Monks had to sing psalms day and night.

He is buried in the Vatican Grottoes. His pontificate lasted only 7 months and 2 days.

St. Paschal I : 817-824 A.D.

98. Born in Rome. Elected January 25, 817 - died February 11, 824.

Immediately after his election, Lodovic the Pious donated Sardinia and Corsica to him. He committed himself to the discovery of catacombs, transferring the mortal remains of more than 2,300 martyrs.

He also provided help to the Christians from Palestine and Spain in the fight against the Saracens.

Three out of the four cardinals consecrated during Paschal's pontificate became his successors, i.e. Valentine, Gregory IV and Sergius II.

During his pontificate a huge fire damaged the Borgo and the flames nearly reached the Portico of St. Peter.

He is buried in the Vatican Grottoes. His pontificate lasted about 7 years.

Eugene II : 824-827 A.D.

99. Born in Rome. Elected May ll, 824 - died August 27, 827.

People say he created the Seminars. He set up a huge commission in charge of the enforcement of precepts and law; the current Roman Curia originated from these severe censors.

He promulgated 38 precepts concerning the discipline of the Clergy.

He ordered the construction of cloisters near cathedrals for the common life of the canons so that they would be ready to celebrate religious services and sing during canonical hours.

He is buried in the Vatican Grottoes. His pontificate lasted about 3 years.

Valentine : 827 A.D.

100. Born in Rome. Elected September 1, 827 - died September 16, 827.

He was beloved by the people, the aristocracy and the clergy because of his purity. The beginning of his short pontificate was celebrated with huge manifestation of jubilation.

During his life, the feasts for his crowning, which have continued to be celebrated, took place for the first time: people say that Valentine was the first to give money to the people on this occasion.

Even if his pontificate lasted only 40 days, he minted coins and his 22-millimeter coin is found in the Vatican collection.

He is buried in the Vatican Grottoes. His pontificate was very short, about 1 month.
